New Battery Storage System in Beckum: evb and Westenergie Choose Entrix as Optimization Partner

Entrix will be responsible for the multi-market optimization of a 55 MWh battery storage system in Beckum, jointly developed by evb, Westenergie, and ESY. The facility will strengthen local grid stability and enable more efficient use of renewable energy.
Energieversorgung Beckum (evb), Westenergie, and E.ON Energy Solutions (ESY) are jointly developing a large-scale battery storage system in the city of Beckum, located in North Rhine-Westphalia. Entrix will manage the system’s optimization and market participation across all relevant electricity markets. The battery has a power of 20 MW and a storage capacity of 55 MWh.
The project is managed by Beckumer Batteriespeicher GmbH, a joint venture between evb and ESY. While evb leads the project development and coordinates citizen participation, ESY is responsible for the technical design. Construction, operation, and maintenance are being carried out by Westenergie Netzservice, acting as general contractor.
Designed to provide grid support services, the battery will help balance frequency fluctuations and return surplus renewable energy to the system when needed—making a key contribution to local energy security and the integration of intermittent generation. On a technical level, the system will be able to supply the city of Beckum with electricity for up to six hours, significantly enhancing resilience in the local energy network.
Steffen Schülzchen, Gründer und Geschäftsführer von Entrix:
“Battery storage systems like the one in Beckum deliver impact where it matters most: at the regional grid level, close to where energy is generated and consumed,” says Steffen Schülzchen, Founder and CEO of Entrix. “This is where grid-supporting flexibility becomes tangible—for supply security, for renewable integration, and for a clean energy transition that is locally anchored.”
Optimizing Battery Performance with AI Across All Energy Markets
Entrix will operate the system using AI-based algorithms that manage trading across all relevant energy markets—including Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR), Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR), and both day-ahead (DAA) and intraday continuous market (IDC). The goal is to optimize both the technical performance and market value of the system—while supporting grid flexibility at the local level.
A Community-Based Energy Transition
This project exemplifies municipal leadership in the energy transition by combining infrastructure development with citizen participation. Up to 500 residents of Beckum will have the opportunity to invest in the battery storage system and share in the returns. A concrete example of the energy transition – socially inclusive and vital to the energy system.
“This is the largest investment in evb’s history—a clear commitment to a secure, sustainable, and affordable energy supply for our region,” says Daniel Dierich, Managing Director of evb.
